Combating Climate Change Through Recycling
Mode: Presentations and Panel Discussion
Description
This session will illustrate the pivotal role of recycling in mitigating climate change, exploring innovative strategies, challenges, and opportunities within the context of Jordan's environmental landscape. Through presentations and panel discussions, participants will gain insights into the strategies and plans adopted by the government and USAID to address the climate challenges facing Jordan, particularly from the perspective of solid waste management and recycling. Participants will receive updates on current accomplishments and forthcoming endeavors/commitments envisioned by Jordan for adapting to and mitigating the impacts of climate change on ecosystems and communities, as well as how Jordan collaborates with international organizations to initiate approaches and mechanisms for addressing challenges and advancing sustainable development. The session will feature case studies and examples demonstrating the crucial role of recycling in climate change mitigation. Moreover, it will highlight how partnerships and collaboration among stakeholders within Jordan's recycling sector can facilitate efficient resource management and circularity, thereby fostering more resilient and sustained environments.
Proposed Structure
This session will include presentations from three different entities and a panel discussion.
The Master of Ceremony (MC) will provide an overview on the pivotal role of recycling sector in mitigating climate change, examining its environmental impact and advocating for sustainable waste management practices to address the challenges of a changing climate. This overview will be provided before introducing the speakers and inviting them to conduct their presentations.
The MC will present each speaker in the session and introduce their bio and CV.

The presentation will showcase how the Cities and Villages Development Bank (CVDB), as a Jordanian organization, pursued accreditation from the Green Climate Fund (GCF), the world's largest climate fund, to become the first entity in the region to submit proposals for GCF projects, facilitated by the Ministry of Environment. Participants will gain highlights on the bank's mandate, which revolves around fostering the transition to a green economy, particularly in municipalities, by offering banking and financing services, technical and environmental assistance, as well as support for sustainability and equal opportunities. This achievement aligns with the newly introduced economic modernization vision in Jordan.

The presentation will present how climate and green finance effectively can help open-up investments in recycling and waste management, according to the international and regional experiences. The presentation will discuss the unique finance needs of waste management and recycling as well as how climate finance can be most effectively leveraged. The presentation will present typical challenges from banks/investors point of view as well as finance needs of the private sector. The presentation will present innovative finance mechanisms including carbon finance and tailored financial products within the context of waste management and recycling. The presentation will present possible finance options and modalities to unlock waste management and recycling markets in Jordan. |
