DAY 2 - June 12, 2024
Session 2 (12:00 – 13:30)
Filling Market Gaps in the Local Recycling Value Chains in Jordan through New and Emerging Technologies
(Presentations and Panel Discussion)
Description
This session will showcase new and innovative technologies addressing market gaps in Jordan, potentially contributing to the utilization of private sector-led recycling services. Through presentations and a panel discussion, participants will gain insights into the new recently established investments in bottle-to-bottle PET recycling, waste to animal feed, and the manufacturing of paper and cardboard from recycled inputs, with total investments exceeding 100 million JOD. These technologies will empower the transition toward integrated and sustainable waste management systems in Jordan, as they address unique constraints and demonstrate potential growth in the primary and secondary recycling value chains. The session will highlight how partnerships and collaboration among stakeholders within Jordan's recycling sector can facilitate efficient resource management and circularity, thereby fostering the transition into sustainable waste management and recycling practices in Jordan.
Proposed Structure
This session will include presentations from three different entities and a panel discussion.
The Master of Ceremony (MC) will provide an overview on the role of the private sector and investment in introducing new technologies and solutions that fill critical gaps in the recycling market in Jordan as well as showcasing large new investments recently introduced in the market by the private sector. This overview will be provided before introducing the speakers and inviting them to conduct their presentations.
The MC will present each speaker in the session and introduce their bio and CV.

Title |
Manufacturing of Paper and Cardboard from Recycled Inputs in Jordan |
Content |
This presentation will introduce the company’s new investment in establishing the first modern paper mill that manufactures paper and cardboard from recycled inputs, offering domestic utilization of paper and cardboard waste instead of exporting to global markets. The facility handles around 500 tons per day and employs up to 500 permanent jobs, with a total investment of 100 million JOD. The company aims to lead the paper and cardboard industry in Jordan while promoting environmental sustainability. |

Title |
Recycling of PET Bottles in Jordan through Bottle-to-Bottle Technology |
Content |
This presentation will introduce the company’s new investment in establishing the first advanced technology for recycling PET bottles in Jordan. The bottle-to-bottle technology aims to recycle plastic bottles manufactured from PET to produce recycled plastic resin (rPET), which can then be reused in the manufacturing process of new bottles. This process complies with both local and international standards for plastic intended for food contact, contributing to environmental preservation, and reducing pollution. The facility will significantly reduce the carbon footprint of plastic bottles made from RPET, with an 87% reduction compared to bottles made from virgin PET materials. Moreover, the project aims to decrease the amount of plastic bottle waste sent to landfills. Additionally, the project seeks to enhance Jordan's industrial sector exports by exporting rPET plastic resin to Europe and the United States. Finally, it will create 100 direct job opportunities and more than 3,500 indirect jobs within the plastic waste bottle supply chains. The total investment exceeds 10 million JOD. |

Valorization of E-Waste Recycling in Jordan |
Content |
This presentation will introduce the company’s new investment in establishing the first advanced technology for recycling e-waste in Jordan. The company has invested in the latest or separating and sorting equipment involved in breaking down e-waste into value-added components which will be sold to suppliers of manufacturing industries. This investment will motivate the domestic market to collect and recycle e-waste instead of exporting low-value material to global markets. The plant will divert over 10,000 tons per year of electronic equipment and devices and employ 20 individuals directly in manufacturing, sales, and operations management, with an additional 100 people employed indirectly in e-waste collection and waste services. The project will be established in Al-Ghabawi and is expected to be in full operation within the next year. |
